Good riddance

The Army has put to rest the most worthless headgear of all time, the black beret. I know most SF, Ranger and Airborne guys wear them with pride, but for practicality, they have no purpose. The last ten years have seen a wealth of jokes regarding the berets. A previous experiment with them long ago ended much the same way. When the Army switched to the beret, I was against it, like my opinion matters, because the black beret was the symbol for the Rangers who EARNED the damned things.
Soldiers will be returning to the classic ball cap, officially known as a patrol cap.
Lets admit it, head gear has style as well as function. The two best were the campaign hat commonly known as the round brown and still worn with pride by drill sergeants, and the boonie.
The next step needs to be the ACUs. Lets go back to the OD greens for a fatigue uniform. I don't want to entirely scrap the cammo, not by a long shot. For troops in combat, it is essential, for garrison duties it is a waste of money. The old pickle suits cost about twenty bucks a uniform, one third of what BDUs cost, and a fraction of what soldiers shell out for the ACUs. Desk clerks and grease monkeys would fare better with the simple OD. It was easy to maintain, cheap to replace, and not a killer to work in. For guys maintaining a track, why ruin combat gear when a simple outfit is available?
My last argument ofr the OD is again style. BDUs and ACUs look like shit no matter how you press em. A pickle suit with a gallon of starch ironed to knife edge creases is sharp beyond sharp.
We won't go into foot gear, combat, work, and spit and polish are too much for tonight.
